"If we fail as consumers to demand wild salmon as our fish of choice they will soon be replaced in the marketplace by inferior, chemically laden farm-raised Atlantic salmon. Wild salmon conservation and management programs will diminish as a priority and the wild salmon populations will begin to disappear as well. Salmon is big business and we as consumers control the purse strings - remember to vote with your fork."
- Chef Greg Higgins, Higgins Restaurant and Bar, Portland, Oregon
Choosing wild-caught salmon at your local store or restaurant sends a strong message to business and industry that wild salmon matter to you; that you won't settle for substitutes or shortcuts. It's an investment in the cold, clean rivers that wild salmon and steelhead require. It’s a vote for healthy habitat, and for open access for migrating fish to spawn there, and for their young then to migrate out to the ocean, then back again. It says you demand that we work to restore the runs that are in trouble, and to manage the stronger ones sustainably.
